The old man and the preacher!

JOHN 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Last week I wrote about some of the distorted images that people have of God. Today I’d like to share a story that gives us a glimpse of His loving, sacrificial nature.

After a few of the usual Sunday evening hymns, the church’s pastor slowly stood up, walked over to the pulpit, and before he gave his sermon for the evening, briefly introduced a guest minister who was in the service that evening.

In the introduction, the pastor told the congregation that the guest minister was one of his dearest childhood friends and that he wanted him to have a few moments to greet the church and to share whatever he felt would be appropriate for the service.

With that, an elderly man stepped up to the pulpit and began to speak. “A father, his son, and a friend of his son were sailing off the Pacific coast,” he began, “when a fast approaching storm blocked any attempt to get back to the shore. The waves were so high that, even though the father was an experienced sailor, he could not keep the boat upright and the three were swept into the ocean as the boat capsized.”

The old man hesitated for a moment, making eye contact with two teenagers who were, for the first time since the service began, looking somewhat interested in his story.

The aged man continued with his story, “Grabbing a rescue line, the father had to make the most excruciating decision of his life: to which boy would he throw the other end of the line? He had only seconds to make the decision. The father knew that his son was a Christian and he also knew that his son’s friend was not. The agony of his decision could not be matched by the torrent of the waves.”

“As the father yelled out, ‘I love you, son!’ he threw out the life line to his son’s friend. By the time the father had pulled the friend back into the capsized boat, his own son had disappeared beneath the raging swells into the black of night. His body was never recovered.”

By this time, the two teenagers were sitting up straight in the pew, anxiously waiting for the next words to come out of the old minister’s mouth.

“The father knew his son would step into eternity with Jesus and he could not bear the thought of his son’s friend stepping into eternity without Jesus; therefore, he sacrificed his son to save the son’s friend. He paused and then spoke with great emotion, “How great is the love of God that He should do the same for us! Our Heavenly Father sacrificed His only begotten Son that we could be saved. I urge you to accept His offer to rescue you and take hold of the lifeline He is throwing out to you in this service.”

With that, the old man turned and sat down in his chair as silence filled the room. The pastor again walked slowly to the pulpit and delivered a brief sermon offering God’s salvation to any who would reach out for it; however, no one responded to his appeal.

Within minutes after the service ended, the two teenagers were at the old man’s side.

“That was a nice story,” politely stated one of the boys, “but I don’t think it was very realistic for a father to give up his only son’s life in hopes that the other boy would become a Christian.”

“Well, you’ve got a point there,” the old man replied, glancing down at his worn Bible. Then he once again looked up at the boys and said with a broad smile, “It sure isn’t very realistic, but that story gives me a glimpse of what it must have been like for God to give up His Son for me. It took a tremendous sacrifice, I know. You see, I was that father in that story, and your pastor is my son’s friend.”

How much is too much?

My friend and I complained at church that the music was too loud...... we have been saying this for quite a long time already.

She actually brings ear plugs, to deafen it some.

It seems in this day and age, they only want to accommodate to the younger generations and the older ones are not as important.

So it seems.

What they forget, is, that there are also older people who have not known the Lord all that long and want to learn more about him too.

But once they are inside a “today” church, and the music starts, it’s more like a performance from the young people “up there” and it seems like they do not expect the congregation to join in.

But, as a congregation, we come together to worship the Lord....

So we spoke to one of the pastors and suggested the music be a little less loud.....

his answer was “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord”

Sure, I totally agree with him, but wow, did he use it out of context at that moment....

In my understanding of that particular verse, is that in certain situations a whisper can be noise.

Pastors can be wrong too, sometimes...

I know of some people who experienced going through WW2, and when ever their dad wanted to listen to the radio.....from overseas....

to hear how the war was going.....and the radio was hidden.... as they were illegal to have,

they, as children had a hard time not making a noise.....so they whispered....

and their dad would tell them, “Stop making so much noise”

as he had the radio quite low and he couldn’t hear......because they were making “too much noise”

So, how much is too much.....

it goes the same with miss quoting a verse in 1 Corinthians 14 v 34, “The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak....etc

So, if I take that as litterlally as this pastor took “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” litterlally, does that then mean as soon as women step inside the church door, they are not allowed to speak?

Really?

What am I to do?

I have been going to the same church now for more than 20 years.

I love going to this church, I watched the littlies grow up and get married and have their children.

I watched them grow from 3 and 4 year olds, to now having their own babies.

But.....and it's a big "but" I am feeling discontent and almost dread going, for the last year or so.

I broke it down to going once every 2 weeks......I was almost relieved, when my "don't have to go today" came around.

What is wrong with me????

Sure, I am not so young anymore, but that should not matter....should it?

The lady next to me, brings earplugs, because, as she says, "The music is deafening!"

Could that be it?

It is very loud, although I did hear someone say the chappie in charge of music could have a hearing problem.

Many times some have asked could the music be turned down some, the pastor says, "no"

I listened again last Sunday, and it seemed like the pastor was talking to a Sunday school class....all milk and no meat....

Could that be it?

I did mention to another person that I thought I might not come back, as I was not getting much out of it anymore....

she thought I should keep coming as an example for others.

But, somehow I don't think I make a very good example, sitting there, not getting anything out of it...
I do go to a midweek meeting, we are studying the book of Genesis, I will admit I get a lot more out of this study than actually going to a church.

I don't know...….will have to see how I go.....I honestly don't know what to do....I live in a small country town, there are not many churches to go to, to try out to see if they are different, or more to what I might need, and, I do believe we go to a church to have a need filled.

Here we go again......

What actually do you think, "Turn the other cheek means?"

In Mathew chapter 5 verse 39, Jesus says “ But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

Have you ever tried to slap someone on the right cheek? Try it!

It’s a back hander. So,

To "turn the other cheek" does not mean you are meek,

nor does it mean we place ourselves in danger.

Turning the other cheek actually refers to personal retaliation,

not criminal offenses.

To me, turning the other cheek means “not to return insult for insult in retaliation” which is what most people expect,

and how worldly people act. By "worldly" I mean none Spirit filled Christians, but there are also plenty of worldly people who would also follow this and NOT want to retaliate. But...… I am sure we all realise,

A back hand slap is more insulting than a normal slap in the face,

which if you get one, is always the left side...

So, that would be more of a challenge to your personality and to see if you would retaliate or not...

so it would take more NOT to retaliate, hence it would be in your favour, to also turn the other cheek, to show your inner strength.

At the altar....

A lot of people are not all that fond of altar calls, I am one of those, but, for some, they are needed as in this case....God knows when to have one and when not to...

By Ed Decker:

There is a time and place when each of us surrendered our carnal lives to a loving God and our lives changed forever. I clearly remember the time I gave up the old Ed and found the new Ed that had been hidden inside for so many years.

But this isn't about me. I will never forget the night that it happened to a very special man.

He was a tall, lean man; elderly, with a wild thicket of pure white hair.

He stood at the front of the small church, tears streaming down his face, hands lifting out and up from his body.

Earlier that day, I drove to the northern Utah town to speak at this church about Mormonism and its heretical doctrines.

I had my notes in order and was ready to explain the unbiblical doctrines of Mormonism to a packed church right in the middle of Mormon country.

After being introduced and welcomed by the pastor, I walked to the podium and scanned the faces of the crowd.

After a few minutes of warm-up comments, I turned to my notes and stopped.

I knew this was not the message thee people came to hear.

They came to hear what was in my heart.

I looked up and began sharing my story, my journey into Mormonism, my life there and my journey out.

At the end of my sharing, I led the congregation in what Christians called an "Altar Call" and asked those who had prayed with me and wanted that same peace of Christ and His gift at the cross to come forward.

Now I stood in front of this elderly gentleman with tears flowing down his cheeks.

I reached up and took his face in both my hands, feeling his tears run through my fingers.

Weeping with him, I cried, "If not one other person ever receives a new life in Christ in all my ministries, you alone are worth it all."

I asked him what he was feeling right then. He sobbed, Oh, The Joy, the joy."

That was many years ago and I never forgot that man and that night.

I found out later that he was a Mormon Temple Worker, one of the most faithful of the faithful...…..

yet heaven reached down and captured his heart. Others went forward that night as well, but sometimes I feel my hands are still wet from his tears.

I think one of the reasons I remember it as though it just happened today is that in some small way, I caught a glimpse of how Jesus must of felt when he died on the cross for you and me.

Somehow, I knew he felt that I, personally, was worth it all, just as he felt you, too, were worth it all.

I was listening to an interview not so long ago....and it was from a chappie called Andrew, who was brought up jewish, but as he grew up, he could not understand “why” he did what he did, at the right age, to do his Jewish bar mizvah...

So He decided he was not going to do this anymore, he actually threw away all the gifts he was given,

and said to himself..., “I am lying, I don’t believe all this....so, that’s it, I’m done with that religious stuff....

As time progressed he sunk into depression.

He was stubborn enough not to want to reach out to God, because he thought that would be a crutch....How would he know that he wasn’t just reaching out to God, in/because of, his depression.

But God reached out to him.

He reached a point where he was actually suicidal. He had a beautiful wife whom he adored and a beautiful daughter Whom he loved, and he was sitting in his room, thinking that they would be better off without him.

He was, at that stage, thinking how he was going to climb up to the top of a building and throwing himself off the roof,

but at the same time he was thinking all this, he was listening to a baseball game on a radio station, He continues:

"the N.Y mets…

and they had a player whom I loved, Garry Carter, he was the catcher, and he was always....

well he was a "loudmouthed Christian" always talking about Jesus Christ....” They'd ask him,

How did you hit that home run,,,?He'd say, "Oh well Jesus blessed me....”

and I used to think....”Yuk.....Yuk.....I hate listening to this....it was like a worm going down the back of my shirt,

why couldn’t he just say I took a good swing at the bat...”

So, at the end of this game he drove out the winning run by beating out a grounder by first base, and the thing is

if you know anything about catchers...… they have terrible knees, …..

and they are incredibly slow.....

and the interviewer came up to Carter and said,

“ How did you manage to beat out that grounder to first base when your knees are so bad?”

So, there I was.....

contemplating suicide...…

and I was thinking to myself, “You know, I do not know how to go on living.... with this pain, with this misery....."

and Carter was asked this question, how he beat out this grounder with such bad knees and instead of saying

“Jesus...Jesus...” (which I would not have listened to at all...)

he said, “Sometimes you just have to play in pain!”

And I thought...”Oh...Oh I can do that...I’m a tough guy....I can play in pain....”

And it changed my entire world view.

It was only later, after I did become a Christian, that I looked back and I thought...”

WOW....not only was that God speaking to me, through Garry Carter, but.....

God set His name aside, because God knew I would not have listened, if Carter had said anything about Jesus.....

God set Himself aside..... to reach out to me....”

and when you think "that is the KING of the universe"...He created everything....

putting Himself aside to reach out to me who is not the king of anything....

I always thought That was a magnificent act...

of humility and grace and mercy! And, I’m really, really grateful for it,

and if I could go back in time to that kid who contemplated suicide, I would go to him and slap him, for it’s such a foolish thing to throw away your life.

How sincere is sincere!

I go to a bible study every Wednesday, and one of the mum’s there was so thrilled because of what her 18year old son told her.

She said, “ My son reckons that Jesus went to hell, totally covered in our sins, he was so covered that satan did not recognise him, and that is how he got the keys from the devil, and that is why he had to go to hell”

He was so sincere in what he said, but you see, he was so sincerely wrong.

You see, Christ alone has conquered death and has Himself come out of grave,

He alone can determine who will enter death and Hades and who will come out.

He has the "keys." He has authority over death and the place of the dead.

Satan has never possessed these "keys."

Satan has never had power to determine who goes to Heaven (the Kingdom) and who goes to Hell.

Jesus did not have to fight Satan for the keys because the keys were never in Satan's possession.

God and God alone has power over death and Hell, as we read in Revelations.

Jesus did not have to fight Satan for anything because Jesus' death on the cross was His ultimate victory.

Colossians ch 2 v 15: tells us, "...and having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."

So, as sincere as this young was, and as thrilled as his mum was......

we had to tell his her, that he was sincerely wrong.

And this happens so often with lovely people who think they are right in what they believe!

They are so sincere............but so sincerely wrong.

This is why we must speak up, when some one tells us something they think, or believe to be correct, if it is not.

Time goes on and on....

Day by day, night by night time goes by. I go to bed at night and think, "Could Jesus be coming tonight?"

I wake up the next morning and again I think, "Could He be coming today?"

It is so easy to begin to believe that God is not coming for His Church any time soon.

Just as the people grew weary listening to Noah’s warning of the flood and made fun of him, people today refuse to recognize, the times we are living in.

As Christians we should live every day as if this was the day of His return.

When the floods came it was too late to make it right with God. Just as when the rapture happens it will be too late to go up in the rapture if we are not saved.

We must pray for the lost. We must tell them the truth about Heaven and Hell.

How can they be saved if they do not know what they are being saved from?

If the occupants of a house that is on fire do not know there is a fire, they will not flee.

People need to know there is consequences of rejected salvation.

Do not allow political correctness keep you from sharing the truth of the Gospel.

Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ,

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfil his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

If we keep our hope in Jesus we can rest in Him, knowing He is coming for us.

We suffer now, but our deliverance is coming, soon.

1 Peter 5:10 (King James Version)
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

Hold on to your faith in Christ. Ask God to help your faith to be strong in Him and for God to remove your doubts. We know our future will be in Heaven.

Let us not turn away from our faith, this close to the prize.
Thank you Betty

CHRIST? IN PSALM 22?

We have heard of martyrs, when burnt at the stake, sing loud, and praise God,

for being able to suffer for him.........

But Jesus did no such thing...

When Jesus died there on the cross......it was doom and gloom!

The darkness lasted for 3 long hours.....

which must have seemed like an eternity to Jesus.....

as this was the first time ever, that His father God did not look on Him,

but had totally withdrawn from him!

It wasn't all that long ago, when John baptised Him and heard the voice, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!"

How could a loving Father do this?

It was because Jesus took all our sins on Him....

and God could not look on that sin.

It must have seemed like an eternity to Jesus....and then....to hear...”It is finished”

The sinner in hell will never ever hear those words.

In psalm 22 we read;
“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answered not;
And in the night season, and am not silent.”

This is a prophetic psalm about Jesus and His agony suffered for us.

Further down, same psalm, he says,

verses 6;7;8;
“A reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn:
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8Commit thyself unto Jehovah; let Him deliver him:”

He is seeing and talking about those who are there, watching him.
Then from verses 12 – 18:

“Many bulls have compassed me;
Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gape upon me with their mouth,
As a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water,
And all my bones are out of joint:
My heart is like wax;
It is melted within me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd;
And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me:
A company of evil-doers have in closed me;
[f]They pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may count all my bones.
They look and stare upon me;
18 They part my garments among them,
And upon my vesture do they cast lots”

Many bulls have compassed me......etc....

I have read many different meanings to this verse, but I think C.S. Lewis got the closest yet....

In C.S. Lewis’ first movie made in 2007 “THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE" he shows where Aslan gives his live in place of Edward.
The witch and all her cohorts, and this is where Lewis is correct, in my opinion, her cohorts all dance around Aslan as he lays on the table ready to die, so verses 12 and 13 are demons, bulls, and other horrible creatures, they are the ugliest looking creatures ever, who gape upon Aslan, with their mouths...( thinking they have won the battle, in this movie Aslan represents the figure of Jesus)

And in Psalm 69v 21: “They gave me also gall for my food;
And in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” This was a drink to help deaden the pain, but Jesus refused it!

I have heard people say, when they were asked to do something, “If I had known how hard this was going to be, I would never have done it”

I thank and praise God, that Jesus did not say that, yet He did know how hard it was going to be! He even said, “I delight to do thy will oh Lord”

The H.S did not come to make peace but CHRIST did

The H.S is not said to be our peace but CHRIST is (The H.S is our comforter)

God did not send “preaching peace” by the H.S...... but by CHRIST

The H.S reveals Christ......He makes us to know, enjoy and feed on CHRIST

Without the H.S we can neither, see, feel, hear, know, experience, nor enjoy CHRIST.

But the H.S never tells the soul to rest on HIS work for peace in the presence of divine Holiness.

He can only present Christ’s work as the solid basis on which the soul must rest forever.

Man’s religion knows nothing about present pardon.

It says, “Do as well as you can,

pray as often as you can,

feel as deeply as you can,

and sometime, before you die,

God will forgive you.

This is ‘Man’s religion” it comes in many forms, yet it’s still........man's religion

In the O.T ( Joshua ch 20) the gates of the cities of refuge stood open day and night...but,

it had to be entered into....

It would not do to site outside and say...

”I am close enough, this should do”

the persuer could still catch up to him and then kill him.

He had to be inside the city and stay there till the priest died...

it’s the same with Jesus...it is no good saying I pray and I read the Bible, I will do the rest later....

you have to follow Him completely, immediately....now.....tomorrow could be too late!

Thank God, that He sent His son....and Thank His Son who so willingly died for me and you!

The old laws and the new laws.

People have asked/suggested/told me, I don’t know how many times, “do we still keep the Old testament laws?”

Well, for one thing, all the laws God gave to Moses, were for the Israelis, not for the gentiles, which is what we are.

But even if those old laws were for the gentiles too, we read in Hebrews chapter 7: ( and this is mainly all about Melchizedek who Abraham met in the book of Genesis).... but this is how I understand it to be, according to the book of Hebrews;

Verse 11: Now if there was perfection through the Levitical priesthood ( because the Jews received the laws under this priesthood) There would not have been any need for another priest, would there?

But the priesthood was changed, so out of necessity, the law also had to be changed....Why? Because of He, of whom these things are said, comes from another tribe. He comes from the tribe of Judah, (not Levi), and no man from this tribe has given attendance at the altar.

And Jesus came from out of Judah, and Moses said nothing, as far as the priesthood is concerned, from this tribe.

So, because the priesthood was changed, transferred to another, so the law was also changed.

There was no perfection under the old law. The new priesthood is made, not like the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life...Christ Jesus.

The old Levitical priesthood was made without an oath, and, as the levites did not have to make an oath, they were born into it, but Christ with an oath by Him, said of Him...
“The Lord sware and will not repent Himself, Thou art a priest forever”

By so much also hath Jesus become the surety of a better covenant.

23 And they indeed have been made priests many in number, because that by death they are hindered from continuing:

24 but he, because he abides for ever, hath his priesthood unchangeable.

25 Wherefore also he is able to save to the uttermost them that draw near unto God through him, seeing he ever lives to make intercession for them.( that is...us)

26 For such a high priest became us, holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

27 who needs not daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people: for this he did once for all, when he offered up himself.

28 For the law appoints men high priests, having infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was after the law, appoints a Son, perfected for evermore.

And with that, the Moses law tells us we are not to commit adultery, but Jesus said, "If a man as much as looks at a woman with lust in his heart, he has committed adultery with her"

And "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you" the new law, when we follow Jesus' law is more strict than the Moses law given to the Israelis.

The anointing from God....

We did a study on the anointing, not so long ago, and I enjoyed doing it, but could not get through to the other ladies, that no where in the WORD does it say that we have to be filled again and again.
We just are so limited in understanding God almighty, that to us, "more" means there is not enough or a lack of something.

But with God, wouldn't that be a wrong answer? God always gives enough! Never a lack of anything!

The apostle John in his letter, tells his readers that they have been anointed by the Holy One (God)and that for them, the anointing they received from Him remains in them.

1 John 2:20-27: 20 And ye have an anointing from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and because no lie is of the truth.

22 Who is the liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, even he that denies the Father and the Son.

23 Whosoever denies the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that confesses the Son hath the Father also.

24 As for you, let that abide in you which ye heard from the beginning. If that which ye heard from the beginning abide in you, ye also shall abide in the Son, and in the Father.

25 And this is the promise which he promised us, even the life eternal.

26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that would lead you astray.

27 And as for you, the anointing which ye received of him abides in you, and ye need not that any one teach you; but as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, ye abide in him.

John is pleading for them to stay true to Christ, not to deny Him and to continue to walk with Him, aware that God has begun a work in them.

He makes no hint that some of them may need an increase in the anointing to be able to function at their best, facing what lies ahead of them. What they have is enough for the job they are to do!

Even The apostle Peter urges us in 2 Peter 1:3-4 that,
“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”

They received the anointing as they turned away from sin, repented and were born again. That anointing was enough to see them through the rest of their lives.

I have also heard, "Well,as you use your anointed gift, you use it up, so it has to be filled up again, like a bucket, you know, you use what's in it, so it needs filling up!"

That then means, to me, that God did not give you enough to begin with, and He has failed us?

yet in both verses above, it says that He has given us enough for life!

I just had to get this off my chest, as they would not listen to me, so you have become my other listeners

Modesty matters

Women, and men, can either complement...... or contradict the message they speak..... with the way they behave and the way they dress.

We have a soup van....so if you volunteered to work there, what would you wear?

Would you wear very short shorts or a mini skirt?

And if you did, what would that say to those who come to the van?

With your actions, and the sign on the van, you are saying, “Look to Christ, we serve Him” but with the way you are dressed, you are saying, “Look at me”

Does not seem right, does it?

I have seen girls come to church with very short shorts, and their mums with very short dresses.....

Now, I’d be the last person to say how you should dress when you go anywhere, but, when the same young lady comes to church in her work uniform, with slacks and a lovely top with a tie and a badge for work...what does that say?

It’s good to come to work nicely dressed.......

but then shouldn't we also come to church, where we meet GOD, nicely dressed?

I would even go so far as to say it is a sin, to dress provocatively.

Believe me, I still almost die from embarrassment, when I think how I dressed, when I was a young teenager, and did not realise what it did to other people.
I thought I looked great, and I probably did, but I certainly was not a good example of what a God fearing young woman should be dressed as. I know I have been forgiven, for, as David asked God, “Forgive me the sins of my youth” so have I asked God, and know I have been forgiven the sins of my youth.

It’s different for any one who is not used to coming to church, and they are welcome, how ever they dress, but, those who come from a Christian back ground, in my humble opinion, should know better and meet God, better dressed than when they go to work!

You know, when Christ hung there on that cross, he was stripped naked, then he was clothed with all our sins...HE hung there, wearing our sins, then, when He rose from the grave, He dressed us, in His righteousness.

And it is just as important for men and boys too....I have seen them come in shorts and flip flops...some even bare footed......yet, when they are going straight to work after church, they wear a nicely ironed shirt and tie and decent shoes.....
So I say, clean up and dress up for meeting God...if you can do it for going to the club, or movies, surely you can do it for the Lord!

Why....did GOD?

For some of us, January 1 hits like a bullet train. To others it’s just another day.

But as we put the holiday bustle behind us and dust off those New Year’s resolutions, don’t forget to thank God for his gift of times and seasons.

Have you ever wondered why God made days, weeks, months, and years in the first place?

Here are three biblical reasons that may change how you think about time.

Times and seasons give rhythm to our lives.

Does God need to divide time in order to keep track of it?

No, but we do! We need times to work and times to rest.

1. The cadence of spring, summer, autumn, and winter offers healthy changes in temperature, scenery, and activity—in a dependable cycle over the years. Also, our finite minds relate better to the past and the future when we have definite markers of time.

God was aware of our needs from the beginning, so on Day Four of creation he said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years” (Genesis 1:14–15). Day and night, months, and years were part of God’s original creation before sin marred the world. He even gave mankind the seven-day week with a pattern of resting on the seventh day, for our benefit (Genesis 2:2–3; Mark 2:27).
In an age of computers and smartphones, we don’t have to look far to learn the exact year, month, day, and time—even down to fractions of a second! But for most of history, if people wanted to know the date or time, they looked up at the heavens. Of course, various timekeeping gadgets have been around for thousands of years, from sundials to obelisks, water clocks to hourglasses. These days we certainly don’t need to go outside to see what time it is—just glance at a digital clock or whip out the iPhone.
Other modern advances also affect our perception of time. For instance, when dusk is falling outside, we just turn on the electric lights and keep going. While these incredible technologies have made us more productive than ever, we run a risk of losing our sense of wonder at the changing seasons.

2. Every sunrise reminds us of God’s faithfulness.
People in ancient times were keenly aware of their dependence on the regular patterns of sun, moon, and stars. If the sun didn’t rise every day, crops would fail and life on earth would collapse! Sadly, most civilizations throughout history have worshipped these heavenly bodies as deities rather than acknowledging them as gifts from the wise Creator God. But we know the consistency of day and night is founded on the unchanging nature and promise of God (Numbers 23:19).

As you go to sleep tonight, you don’t have to wonder if the sun will rise tomorrow. The Creator has promised, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). The sunrise is faithful because our God is faithful. He perfectly upholds the sun, moon, and stars in the courses he has set for them, and we can count on the Lord to fulfil all his promises to his people.

When you’re tempted to complain about the winter weather or summer’s blistering heat, remember that even these, point to the faithful hand of God fulfilling his promises.

3. Each day, week, month, and year is a new beginning.
In addition to reminding us of God’s faithfulness, each new day is also a testament to his grace—giving us what we don’t deserve. The Creator is patient and kind even to those who hate him, as Scripture says, “He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).
As sinful people living in a broken world, we especially welcome the fresh start offered by a new year. It’s a reminder of the clean slate that is ours because of the gospel—those who come to God in repentance and faith receive forgiveness and hope of eternal life!
Praise the Lord that each new day is an opportunity to put the past behind us because of his great mercy. No matter what darkness you faced yesterday, today we can say with the prophet Jeremiah, “This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21–23).

Conclusion
The Creator didn’t have to bless us with these heavenly markers of times and seasons, but he graciously did. So why not step outside to observe the moon tonight and praise God for a sunrise in the morning?
