DOES “GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES”?

If your pastor asked you, "How many of you agree with the Biblical saying, “GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES”?

How many of us would raise our hands?

Maybe, sadly it would be an embarrassing number.

Why embarrassing?

Well......it is not a Biblical Principal.

I must admit a few years ago, my hand would have been raised.

That saying sounds correct and sounds even good, but it is like saying: “God came to save those good enough to almost be saved”.

The truth is those who live good lives are often hard to be reached with the Gospel, because they think that they have it made.

God came to save the sinners......the hopeless......and the lost.

If we live by the Principal above, our attitude is: “God, I got this, but if I run into a problem, I will let you know”.

God says for us to come to Him first and not wait until the water is over our head.

James 4:2New International Version (NIV) 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

We often struggle and fight our way through our days, because we neglected to go to God in prayer before we begin the day.

So often, we go to God as a last result.

If there is a two person job and your mate is in the house and you struggle until your hands are raw and you are covered with sweat before asking your mate to help you, then you are not utilizing your resources.

Go first and ask your mate to help. If he says no, then do not do the chore. Let it go undone until he helps you or ask someone else to help.

In the same way, begin your day praising God and then ask Him to be with you throughout the day. Unlike our mates who sometimes can be a little contrary, God always wants to help us.
Matthew 7: Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

There is not going to be a crown given for stubbornness or self sufficient.

God rewards those who come to Him in faith, expecting an answer. Our goal as Christians, should be, to become more and more dependent on God. Contrary to the laws of mankind, this does not make us weak Christians. The more we trust and depend on God, the stronger our spiritual health, becomes.

2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

2 Corinthians 12:10 “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

God is not in the business of helping those who think they are beyond needed help. He helps those who humble themselves and cry out to God for help. Call out to God Daily and never feel ashamed of needing God.

Remember God came to save us and to keep us living on the righteous path. He takes joy in His children who admit their need of Him.

When we become so prideful that we refuse to admit to God we need help we are indeed in trouble.

Proverbs 16:18 King James Version (KJV)18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Seek the face of God every day in prayer. Learn depend upon Him to keep you walking in faith.
